Aktar Islam, restaurant manager has won the coveted second prize, from hundreds of entrants in the prestigious M.A.R.C.H (Midland Association of Restaurants, Caterers & Hotels) Awards for Excellence 2003 for Manager of Tomorrow. This competition, established since 1997, in association with the Evening Mail. Designed to improve standards, to develop interaction within the industry, to reward staff for their skills and commitment, and to maintain awareness of this key industry, a tough competition was held earlier this year. This culminated in Awards for Excellence Grand Finale dinner on 13th April at the International Convention Centre - a venue reflecting the importance of this event to an industry vital to the economy of the region.
Aktar, aged 24, was selected after intensive competition over several months. This included preparing proposals with original and practical ideas on reducing labour turnover in the hospitality industry, and a presentation to independent judges, pre-eminent in their fields, on problems and opportunities facing hospitality management over the next 5 years.
"Aktar's performance was outstanding," says Lasan's owner Jabbar Khan, "particularly because he was the only representative in the final from either an independent or an Asian restaurant. It's a real achievement because he was competing against other finalists from major hotel groups or chains."
Aktar joins his colleagues - Munayam Khan, Moddobir Hussain, Zahed Ahmed, Rezaur Rahman and Jabbar Khan - who have all been finalists or winners of prestigious industry awards during the past few months. Not a bad result for a restaurant that has only just celebrated its first anniversary!
